Author Profile: Carrie Sutton

Carrie is a native of the Pacific Northwest and has recently made the short trek from the University of Oregon campus to Portland, OR. For the past seven years, her roots have been planted in retail marketing and graphic design; however, she's always had a secret love for all things techy. Her inner geek has now found a home in the Marketing Department at Digimarc. On the Digimarc Discover™ Blog, she plans to share a fresh-faced perspective on the power of digital watermarking.

Being a proud graduate of the UO's Journalism School, she's a little excited about the fact that her color range has opened up beyond green and yellow. You can find her sporting her newly color-coordinated wardrobe in restaurants with good food and beer. Did she mention she is highly persuaded by free food?

Praise for Digimarc Discover and House Beautiful Magazine News

Digimarc was chosen as App of the Day by Apple’N’Apps.com! We are honored and pleased to be in such excellent company as Apple’s Store app and Mint.com.

House Beautiful magazine first began using Digimarc Discover™ technology in their July/August issue. Their adventure with digital watermarks was a success, and the October edition contained seven watermarks and introduced a new digital Table of Contents section. You can read the full press release here. The momentum continued to build when they announced that their November cover would be their first to be digitally watermarked. The payoff was a fantastic video short that paid homage to early Andy Warhol films. As of late, House Beautiful has also announced that they will begin leveraging digital watermarks in their advertising and marketing beginning in February 2012. Take a peek at the video below of Digimarc Discover in action in their November pages:

How Can I Help Preserve My Digital Watermarks?

We’ve had increasing interest by our customers on how to best maintain the integrity of digital watermarks. Here are a few tips and tricks that should help in the long run:

High strength watermarks survive the best.
Make sure to embed your images with a higher strength; this just means you are putting more watermark signal into your image. With our new "Chroma" technology, we suggest using an embed strength of 3 or 4, as the watermark should still be imperceptible. It is also easier for your watermark to survive when you save your final image at a maximum quality setting in Photoshop.

Endless Potential

I’m a newbie at Digimarc and have dived headfirst into all the possibilities that digital watermarking has to offer. Prior to Digimarc, my only exposure to action codes was of the QR variety. The graphic designer in me shouted, “They’re so ugly!” Now that I’ve been introduced to Digimarc Discover™, I’m thrilled with the possibilities of an imperceptible solution. With digital watermarking, magazines and catalogs wanting to provide print-to-mobile experiences no longer have to sacrifice valuable real estate with square barcodes. House Beautiful is a great example of a publication doing some cutting edge mobile initiatives with Digimarc Discover.

In my quest to find information to share in our social media world, I came across Stereo Abstract who is an Online Services Portal customer. It’s exciting to see that our customers have taken the possibilities of digital watermarking and created their own pieces of art. Check out the preview of his interactive art book powered by Digimarc Discover.  He’s upped the value factor and plans on taking his readers on a journey – not just to his website but to content-rich videos about his artist background and influences. Thank you for the inspiration Stereo Abstract, and we look forward to your upcoming creation!
