Vampire Steals Photo!
OK, that headline was a bit sensationalized. Since the undead are such a hot topic I thought it might help spice up a blog on watermarking and bring in a whole new audience. Maybe.
So how do vampires and digital watermarking blogs connect? Let's sink out teeth into it...
Yahoo! News reported this week that Vampire Weekend, the Brooklyn band, thought they bought the rights to a photo of former fashion model Ann Kirsten Kennis and used it for the cover of "Contra." According to the article, Kennis thinks it's a Polaroid that her mom took.
However, photographer Tod Brody says he took the pic and has a signed photo release from her. There is a question regarding the signatures on the release, a question as to where this photo came from... and of course, now a lawsuit.
So I'm just going to point out how simple it would be to resolve at least the photo's attributions. If either Kennis' mom or Tod Brody had watermarked the photo with Digimarc for Images when they took it, the matter of who took what could be settled. Of course, if it truly is a 20-year old Polaroid, they couldn't, but you can.
Depending how this lawsuit works out, those of you with copy of Vampire Weekend's "Contra" might end up with a collector's item!
