Guest Blog: I know its mine, and I can prove it! (If I could only find it again…)

The following blog was written by one of our readers, C. Daniel Miller. I'd like to thank Dan for writting up his solution for managing his images using the Digimarc for Images product.  I was happy that Dan wanted to share his solution and really hope you enjoy our guest author and find his solution useful.  I look forward to seeing your comments and maybe guest blogs from other readers will be submitted. -Don

I know its mine, and I can prove it! (If I could only find it again…)

This blog is about working out a numbering scheme that will let you find and identify a particular image that you wish to put on the Internet. Since you are reading this on Digimarc’s website, you may assume that it has something to do with their watermark. And you would be right. This article may offer you a way to more effectively use your Digimarc for Images service as you publish and share your photos.

How Can Too Much Image Data Be a Bad Thing? Or What Happened to My Digital Watermark?

You’ve just taken an amazing photo — perfect for a magazine cover.  You post it to your website, share it with friends and a few photo sites, and are confident that an editor from a major magazine will be calling soon once they see it and get your contact info.

Even worse, someone has copied it onto their blog, resized it with no attribution and the watermark is unreadable. It seems unlikely your image will be on any cover soon since your ownership and contact info are no longer attached to your photo. So what’s causing all your info to disappear?

Lens Flair is Digimarc Enabled

There are a lot of great photographers and designers that use Digimarc to communicate copyright information and track their images online.

A gallery that recently came to my attention is Lens Flair, a portfolio of photographs from Andy Farrar. In addition to the Digimarc for Images solution, Andy utilizes the Digimarc Enabled co-branding in the footer of his site to communicate his images are watermarked.

Andy got started with a Kodak 126 Instamatic camera when he was a kid, ran a photography shop, studio and darkroom with his brother and in his own words went digital a few years back.

I’m partial to his color work, including "Fisherman on Boat" but judge for yourself. Check out Andy’s Gallery.
